The Republic of Kenya is in East Africa and named after Mount Kenya, a significant landmark and the second among the highest mountain peaks of Africa. Kenya's population has rapidly increased over the past several decades, and consequently it is relatively young. Some 73% of Kenyans are under 30.[46] In 80 years, Kenya's population has grown from 2.9 million to 37 million. Most Kenyans are bilingual in English and Swahili, also a large percentage speak the mother tongue of their ethnic tribe.
Kenya's education system consists of early childhood education, primary, secondary and college. Preschooling, which targets children from age three to five, is an integral component of the education system and is a key requirement for admission to Standard One (First Grade).
Oprhans and Vulnerable children in Kenya
OLIVE LEAF Foundation works in three of the eight provinces in Kenya. Its operations are geared towards supporting households with orphans and vulnerable children to enhance care and support as well as HIV prevention through Abstinence and Behaviour Change among the Youth (ABY)The following is a brief of the towns where OLF works.
Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with a current estimated population of about 3 million. According to the 1999 Census, in the administrative area of Nairobi, 2,143,254 inhabitants lived within 696 km2 (269 sq mi). Nairobi is currently the 13th largest city in Africa, based on population and Fourth Largest in infrastructure development and its size.
Kiambu District is an administrative district in the Central Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kiambu. The district is adjacent to the northern border of Nairobi. The district has a population of 744.010 [1].It is predominantly a rural area. The second district OLF works in is the Machakos District which is part of the Eastern Province of Kenya and consists mainly of hilly terrain with a large number of family farms. It borders Nairobi district. Kitui District is an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Kitui.
Working with the Provincial Children Officers in Nairobi, Machakos and Kitui, OLF identified local organisations that that contribute to the well-being of young children. Through a process that included capacity assessment, support for proposal writing and grant management training for the four organizations that eventually qualified , OLF Kenya has continued to help them refine these activities and improve their impact.
Through funds from the Swedish International Development Agency, under ROSI-Regional OVC Institutional Support Intiative; the grantee partners will have ongoing technical support relationship to share experiences and document lessons learned. Other select OVC serving organizations will be supported to enhance their capacity to support children and devlop their competency in OVC care through these funds. Instiutional capacity development remains a strong component of OLF K programming now and for the future.
A similar process conducted for the youth serving organizations before settling on the two to implement the ABY programme.
