Head of Department|Internal Audit

Leon Steyn was appointed as the OLIVE LEAF Foundation’s head of Internal Audit in April 2009, where he is responsible to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control and governance processes.

Leon started his career in 1989 at the Correctional Service whilst studying towards becoming a Business Analyst (then known as Work Study Officer) at the Tshwane University of Technology (then known as Technikon Pretoria). In 1991 he completed his National Diploma in Organisation and Work Study and was also transferred to Department of Home Affairs where he worked for 7 years in the Organisation and Work Study department as a Business Analyst. During this period he was involved in designing organizational structures, improving business processes, methods, work flows and form design. He also determined and recommended accommodation and establishment needs for the organization and handled some ministerial enquiries.

In 1998 he was transferred to The Finance Department in the Organisation and Work Study department. The organization went through an interesting and exciting transformation process to become known as the “South African Revenue Service” (SARS). Due to the various needs of the organization Leon accepted a position in the Internal Audit department where he was involved in Performance, Customs and Income Tax Audits for 10 years.

Leon is in the process of obtaining a CIA certification at the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). He lives in Pretoria and has been married to Mari since 2003. They have three children, Kyle, Keenan and Ciara.
