Our Cape Town Family Wellness Coordinator, Natalie Sessions recently became involved with a unique and innovative programme run by Parliament, known as ‘The Bokamoso Ba Rona Youth Campaign’, the brainchild of the Parliamentary Millennium Programme. According to its website, this campaign “is premised on the belief that the youth play a key role in creating and realizing a positive vision of a future South Africa”, and aims to “facilitate public participation with a segment of our society that is often regarded as disinterested and apathetic towards social and political issues.” Bokamoso Ba Rona is designed to allow young people the opportunity not only to raise challenging issues but also to discuss and create potential solutions to these challenges. It is really about giving youth a voice and a chance to impact on the future of our country.

This campaign has had a number of phases including identifying and training ‘Bokamoso Ambassadors’, a MXIT Campaign and community outreach campaign in the form of a social survey to ascertain what youth care about and what is on their minds (in this regard, an incredible 54 500 young people were surveyed), and the creation of a youth magazine entitled, ‘Ur Turn’.

The next stage of the project involves holding Youth Dialogue Forums across the country to discuss the results of the social survey in greater detail and to try and find solutions to the core problems that the youth perceive are facing the country today. It is at this stage that Natalie became involved as one of the facilitators during this process. The outcomes of these Youth Dialogue Forums will then be highlighted at a Youth Summit to be held at Parliament in 2011. This summit will give youth an opportunity to engage with the country’s decision makers on these issues and hopefully, in turn be able to influence policy and decision making.

The Bokamoso Ba Rona Youth Campaign is one that is an extremely forward thinking and innovative governmental initiative and the Natalie mentioned that she feels incredible privileged to be part of it.
