A Greenhouse in Kenya

Terry Greenhouse

Tomato Greenhouse

Our manager in Kenya writes:

This photo captures an Income Generating Activity funded by USAID and OLF Kenya through one of our sub grantees called Terry Children and Youth Rescue Centre in Machakos (Eastern Province). The greenhouse grows tomatoes which fetch very good prices since the area is dry and goes along way in supporting many OVCs from the surrounding neighborhood. The sub grantee also managed to pump water from a near by seasonal river to water the plants. This is truly a success story. Other activities carried out by the same are provision of farm inputs, fertilizer and seeds to very poor households with OVCs that will provide them some food to eat and sell during the coming rains.

Terry Children and Youth Resource Centre is located in Machakos (Eastern Province). What began as a rescue home for abandoned children has now grown to a professionally run and efficient community based organisation. Leah, the Executive Director thanks USAID and OLIVE LEAF Foundation Kenya for the assistance she has received. Terry is now a success story having managed to have reached 2,215 OVC’s. They also have provided the OVC’s households especially those that are child headed with farm inputs, fertilizers and seeds to plant during the forthcoming rains. Terry is also another success story of what an organisation can do when supported to put in place governance structures and improve service delivery. They too have attracted other funding opportunities!

A great example of enabling sustainable community development!
